The Road to the Baggataway Cup Begins September 9

The wait is almost over.

The 2026 CUFLA season officially gets underway Wednesday, September 9, as the Trent Excalibur host the Carleton Ravens at Justin Chiu Stadium in Peterborough. From there, the schedule quickly picks up steam, with 12 of CUFLA's 14 teams taking the field during the opening week and a full slate of games stretching into November.

By the time the final whistle blows, one team will be left standing as Baggataway Cup champion.

But first, the road begins in Peterborough.

Wednesday, September 9

Carleton at Trent | 7 p.m. | Justin Chiu Stadium, Peterborough

The 2026 season begins under the lights with an Eastern Conference matchup between Carleton and Trent. The Excalibur are coming off a trip to the 2025 Baggataway Cup and will begin their season at home before facing one of the league's most demanding opening stretches. Trent plays three games in five days, travelling to Montreal on Saturday before heading to Bishop's on Sunday. For Carleton, the season begins on the road before the Ravens return home Sunday to host McGill.

It's an early test for both programs and the first chance to put last season behind them.

Friday, September 11

Laurier at McMaster | 8 p.m. | Alumni Field, Hamilton

The Western Conference joins the action Friday night when Laurier visits McMaster.

It's a familiar regional matchup, but the stakes are immediately important. Both teams will be looking to establish themselves early in a Western Conference that features several teams with legitimate championship ambitions.

For McMaster, the season continues with another major test just five days later when Western visits Alumni Field.

Saturday, September 12

Trent at McGill | 3 p.m. | Molson Stadium, Montreal

Less than 72 hours after opening the season at home, Trent heads to Montreal for its second game.

McGill finished first in the Eastern Conference in 2025 and advanced to the Baggataway Cup semifinals. The Redbirds will be making their 2026 debut against a Trent team that already has a game under its belt.

It's a difficult early assignment for the Excalibur and an opportunity for McGill to make an immediate statement.

Ottawa at Bishop's | 7 p.m. | Coulter Field, Lennoxville

Bishop's opens its season at home Saturday night against Ottawa.

The Gaiters won't have much time to recover. They'll be back on the field Sunday afternoon to host Trent, making the opening weekend an immediate test of depth and conditioning.

Ottawa, meanwhile, gets its first chance to start building momentum in the Eastern Conference.

Western at Toronto | 7 p.m. | Varsity Field, Toronto

One of CUFLA's traditional powers opens its season in downtown Toronto.

Western visits a Toronto team that reached Super Qualifier Weekend last season, setting up one of the more intriguing matchups of the opening weekend.

The Varsity Blues will have home-field advantage, but the challenge doesn't end there. Toronto is back on the field Sunday afternoon against Nipissing.

Sunday, September 13

Trent at Bishop's | 1 p.m. | Coulter Field, Lennoxville

Trent's opening-week gauntlet concludes Sunday afternoon against Bishop's.

The Excalibur will be playing their third game in five days, while the Gaiters will be appearing for the second time in less than 24 hours.

It's the kind of early-season weekend that can reveal a lot about a team's depth and preparation.

McGill at Carleton | 2:40 p.m. | Raven's Road Field, Ottawa

McGill and Carleton meet in Ottawa in another important Eastern Conference matchup.

Both teams will already have a game under their belts by the time they take the field, giving each an early opportunity to gain ground in the conference race.

Guelph at McMaster | 4:30 p.m. | GSCE

The defending Baggataway Cup champions finally enter the 2026 season.

Guelph captured its sixth national championship last season after going 12-1 during the regular season and defeating Nipissing 15-5 in the Baggataway Cup final.

The Gryphons' only loss of 2025 came against Nipissing, making the defending champions one of the most closely watched teams heading into the new season.

Their first test comes against McMaster on September 13.

Nipissing at Toronto | 4 p.m. | Varsity Field, Toronto

Toronto's opening weekend gets no easier.

Less than 24 hours after facing Western, the Varsity Blues welcome Nipissing to Varsity Field.

The Lakers had the best season in program history in 2025, reaching the Baggataway Cup final for the first time. Along the way, they eliminated Toronto in Super Qualifier Weekend before defeating Queen's and top-seeded McGill to earn their place in the championship game.

Nipissing enters 2026 with plenty to prove and a championship opportunity that ended one game short last season.

The Road Gets Longer

Opening Week is only the beginning. The schedule quickly becomes a marathon, with teams travelling across Ontario and Quebec and conference races beginning to take shape.

Guelph's title defence continues with a trip to North Bay on Friday, September 18 to face Nipissing in a rematch of last year's Baggataway Cup final. The Lakers handed the Gryphons their only regular-season loss of 2025, making the matchup one of the first major dates on the 2026 calendar.

The following day, Brock opens its season at home against McMaster, while Western hosts Laurentian and Queen's travels to Montreal to face McGill. From there, the schedule settles into the familiar rhythm of CUFLA lacrosse: conference battles, long road trips, weekend doubleheaders and games that become increasingly important as November approaches.

There will be plenty of storylines to follow. Can Guelph defend its championship? Can Nipissing take the final step after reaching its first Baggataway Cup final? Can McGill remain at the top of the East? Can Brock return to championship weekend? And which of the league's other programs will emerge as a contender? Those questions won't be answered in September. But they start to take shape then.

The Road to Ottawa

The destination is already set.

The 2026 Baggataway Cup will be hosted by the University of Ottawa, bringing CUFLA's championship weekend to Canada's capital.

Before the league's best teams arrive in Ottawa, they'll have to navigate nearly two months of regular-season competition and earn their way through the postseason.

It all starts September 9. The fields are ready. The teams are ready.

Now the road to the Baggataway Cup begins.
