CUFLA Announces Changes to League Staff and Communications Team

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association is announcing several changes to its league staff as CUFLA prepares for the 2026 season, including a transition in the league's communications department and new additions to the CUFLA team.

After more than a decade of service to the league, longtime Media and Communications Director Stephen Stamp is stepping back from his CUFLA responsibilities. He will be succeeded in the communications role by veteran lacrosse media personality and commentator Gary Groob.

CUFLA is also announcing the departure of longtime Treasurer Mark Walker, the addition of former CUFLA player Grayden Power in a full time social media and fan engagement role, and an interim arrangement for overseeing league finances.

A Thank You to Stephen Stamp:

For CUFLA, the departure of Stephen Stamp marks the end of an important era.

Stephen joined the CUFLA executive in 2013 and quickly became one of the most recognizable voices and storytellers associated with the league. Over the past 13 years, he has helped document the growth of CUFLA, covering its players, coaches and teams while providing play by play for the Baggataway Cup every year. His connection to university lacrosse goes back much further.

Born and raised in Peterborough, Stephen played high school lacrosse at Adam Scott Collegiate before attending Trent University. He began working at Trent at just 12 years old and went on to graduate from the university, earning Male Athlete of the Year honours twice and winning the Arthur Cup as Trent's top graduating male athlete. He also came up with the name Excalibur for Trent's varsity teams.

Stephen's career in lacrosse media has extended well beyond CUFLA. He began writing for Inside Lacrosse in 2010 and became co editor in 2011. He was twice recognized with the Tom Borelli Award as the NLL Media Person of the Year, in 2013 and 2018.

Throughout his time with CUFLA, Stephen brought that same knowledge, credibility and passion to university field lacrosse.

His work has helped give CUFLA a voice and has ensured that the accomplishments of its student athletes have been recognized and shared with the wider lacrosse community.

“It has been a privilege to be part of the CUFLA executive for over a decade. I have had a lot of fun watching CUFLA lacrosse and I will continue to do so. At this time, other commitments are making it too difficult for me to provide CUFLA the kind of coverage it deserves. I know I'm leaving the league in great hands with the current leadership group and with Gary Groob stepping in to take over the communications role.”

“Thank you to the players, coaches and everyone else who puts so much time and passion into CUFLA for welcoming me as part of the family. It truly is a special league. While I won't be in the same role, I will continue to support CUFLA and I'll remain a big fan.”

CUFLA is deeply grateful to Stephen for his extraordinary contribution over the past 13 years. His work has become part of the history of the league, and his voice has been a familiar part of some of CUFLA's biggest moments.

While he is stepping away from his formal responsibilities, Stephen will remain a supporter of the league and a fan of university lacrosse.

Welcome, Gary Groob:

Taking over CUFLA's communications responsibilities is Gary Groob, who brings more than a decade of experience covering lacrosse at the local, national and professional levels across Canada and the United States.

Gary is the Executive Director and host of All Lacrosse All The Time and co hosts NLL Lacrosse Talk alongside Frank Stanisci. His media career has included written, live and social media coverage, along with hundreds of interviews with players, coaches, executives and other influential figures throughout the lacrosse community.

He currently serves as Director of Social Media for both Major Series Lacrosse and Ontario Series Lacrosse, helping promote their teams, players and stories to growing audiences.

Gary's passion for telling the stories behind the game makes him a natural fit for CUFLA as the league looks to expand its coverage and reach new audiences.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to join CUFLA. This league is filled with tremendous student athletes, dedicated coaches and outstanding programs, and there are so many great stories waiting to be told. I’m looking forward to helping showcase the people and passion that make CUFLA so special.”

CUFLA is excited to welcome Gary to the team and looks forward to seeing his experience and perspective brought to the league's coverage.

Thank You to Mark Walker

Another longtime member of the CUFLA team is also stepping back from his responsibilities.

Mark Walker, who has served as CUFLA Treasurer for many years, has stepped away from the role this season.

Mark's connection to CUFLA dates back to the beginning of the league. His dedication and hard work over the years have played an important role in keeping CUFLA's operations moving forward.

Much of the work required to run a league happens behind the scenes, and Mark has devoted countless hours to CUFLA while helping oversee the league's financial responsibilities.

The entire CUFLA community extends its sincere gratitude to Mark for his many years of service and commitment to the league.

CUFLA will begin the search for its next Treasurer. In the meantime, Deputy Commissioner Tom Bileski will temporarily oversee the league's financial operations to ensure a smooth transition.

Grayden Power Joins CUFLA Full Time

There is also a new addition to the CUFLA team.

After working as a volunteer with the league last season, Grayden Power has formally joined CUFLA and will oversee the league's social media accounts and fan engagement.

Grayden is a former CUFLA player and McMaster University graduate who brings a unique understanding of the league from both the player and media perspectives.

He has quickly established himself as one of CUFLA's most creative contributors, producing graphics, developing storylines and finding new ways to engage fans with the league and its players.

The impact of that work was evident last season. CUFLA generated more than one million social media views during Baggataway Cup week alone, as the league's digital audience continued to grow.

Grayden has played a significant role in that growth, helping CUFLA develop social channels that have become among the most engaging in amateur sport. His move into a formal role with CUFLA is another step toward building a stronger digital presence for the league and creating more opportunities to showcase the people, rivalries and stories that make university lacrosse special.

A New Chapter for CUFLA

The changes represent a significant transition for CUFLA, but also an exciting opportunity for the league to continue building its presence both on and off the field.

Stephen Stamp and Mark Walker have each made lasting contributions to CUFLA, and the league is grateful for the time, energy and passion they have invested over so many years.

At the same time, the arrival of Gary Groob and the addition of Grayden Power to the CUFLA team bring new ideas, experience and energy at an important time for the league.

With CUFLA continuing to grow its audience, strengthen its digital presence and tell more of the stories surrounding its student athletes, the communications team will play an increasingly important role in connecting the league with fans across Canada.

CUFLA will continue to move forward under the executive leadership of Commissioner Scott Fox and Deputy Commissioner Tom Bileski, alongside the league's executive team, member universities, coaches, players and volunteers.
