The Road to the Baggataway Cup Begins September 9

The 2026 CUFLA season is almost here.

The master league schedule is still being finalized, as some teams work through campus facility scheduling issues. CUFLA expects to release the full schedule by the end of this week. In the meantime, Opening Week is set, and there is already plenty to look forward to.

Guelph enters 2026 as the defending Baggataway Cup champion after a dominant 12-1 season. The Gryphons defeated Nipissing 15-5 in last year's championship game, capturing their sixth Baggataway Cup and first since 2014. Their only loss of the season came against those same Lakers, who beat Guelph 14-12 in North Bay.

Nipissing went on to enjoy the best season in program history, reaching the Baggataway Cup championship game for the first time. McGill finished first in the Eastern Conference before advancing to the national semifinals, where it was joined by Brock.

Now everybody starts again at 0-0.

Wednesday, September 9

Carleton at Trent 7 p.m. | Justin Chiu Stadium, Peterborough

The 2026 CUFLA season officially begins under the lights in Peterborough.

Trent was one of the league's strongest defensive teams last season and earned a trip to the Baggataway Cup. Carleton gets the first opportunity of the new season to test that defence and make an early statement in the East. It's also the beginning of a demanding opening stretch for Trent. The Excalibur will play three games in five days to start the season.

Friday, September 11

Laurier at McMaster 8 p.m. | Alumni Field, Hamilton

The Western Conference joins the action Friday night with a natural regional matchup.

Laurier makes the short trip down Highway 403 to face McMaster under the lights at Alumni Field. Both programs get an immediate opportunity to pick up important points in what should once again be a highly competitive Western Conference.

Saturday, September 12

Trent at McGill 3 p.m. | Molson Stadium, Montreal

Less than 72 hours after opening the season at home, Trent heads to Montreal for a major early-season test. McGill finished first in the East last season and earned a direct berth in the Baggataway Cup semifinals. The Redbirds will be making their 2026 debut against a Trent team that already has a game under its belt.

Ottawa at Bishop's 7 p.m. | Coulter Field, Lennoxville

Bishop's opens its season in front of its home crowd Saturday night when Ottawa visits Coulter Field. It's the first game of the year for both programs and the beginning of a busy weekend for the Gaiters, who will be back on the field Sunday afternoon.

Western at Toronto 7 p.m. | Varsity Field, Toronto

One of CUFLA's traditional powers opens the season under the lights in downtown Toronto.

Western visits a Toronto team that reached Super Qualifier Weekend last season. The Varsity Blues will have home-field advantage, but they'll also face one of the toughest opening weekends in the league. Another major test arrives less than 24 hours later.

Sunday, September 13

Trent at Bishop's 1 p.m. | Coulter Field, Lennoxville

Trent completes a stretch of three games in five days with a Sunday afternoon visit to Bishop's. The Gaiters will also be playing on short rest after hosting Ottawa Saturday night. With both teams already having played during the weekend, this could be an early test of depth and conditioning.

McGill at Carleton 2:40 p.m. | Raven's Road Field, Ottawa

Carleton returns home after opening the season Wednesday in Peterborough and immediately welcomes one of the top teams in the East.

McGill will also be playing its second game of the weekend. It's an early opportunity for both teams to start establishing themselves in the Eastern Conference race.

Nipissing at Toronto 4 p.m. | Varsity Field, Toronto

Toronto's opening weekend doesn't get any easier.

Less than 24 hours after facing Western, the Varsity Blues welcome the defending Baggataway Cup finalists to Varsity Field. Nipissing finished 7-3 last season and eliminated Toronto in Super Qualifier Weekend before beating Queen's and top-seeded McGill on the way to the first Baggataway Cup championship game in program history. For the Lakers, it's the beginning of a season filled with expectations. For Toronto, back-to-back games against Western and Nipissing provide an immediate opportunity to show how far the program has come.

Still to Come

Eight CUFLA teams will be in action during Opening Week. For the rest of the league, the wait will only be a little longer.

Guelph begins its title defence with plenty of attention on the defending champions. The first fully confirmed matchup on the current schedule sends the Gryphons back to North Bay to face Nipissing on Friday, September 18 at 5 p.m. It is a rematch of last year's Baggataway Cup final and a return to the field where Guelph suffered its only loss of 2025.

Brock opens its season Saturday, September 19 at home against McMaster. The Badgers reached the Baggataway Cup semifinals last season and will begin another run at the championship in front of their home crowd.

Laurentian also begins on Saturday, September 19, travelling to Mustang Field to face Western at 7 p.m. It's a difficult road assignment to start the year before the Voyageurs return to Sudbury for their home opener the following week.

Queen's starts its confirmed schedule Saturday, September 19 at McGill. The Gaels will be thrown immediately into the Eastern Conference race against a Redbirds team that finished first in the East last season.

Let the Games Begin

Opening Week is only the beginning.

Guelph has a championship to defend. Nipissing has unfinished business after the best season in program history. McGill will try to remain at the top of the East. Brock is coming off another trip to championship weekend, while programs across both conferences enter September with their own reasons to believe 2026 could be their year.

The complete CUFLA schedule is expected to be released by the end of this week.

The first faceoff comes next Wednesday night in Peterborough.
