HAMILTON, Ont. – As the Fall 2025 collegiate lacrosse season approaches, the Mohawk College Mountaineers Sixes lacrosse program is set to enter its third year, continuing its growth as a pioneering initiative in Canadian collegiate sport.

Launched in 2023, the Mountaineers became the first college in Canada to introduce a lacrosse sixes program – an exciting, fast-paced format of the traditional sport that will debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. While Mohawk is also the first college outside of Quebec to offer any form of collegiate lacrosse, its Sixes program remains a national first. As the program continues to seek an official league for competition, the 2025 season will once again feature exhibition matchups against Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) opponents, along with a return to the CUFLA Sixes Showcase Game during the 2025 Baggataway Cup weekend.

Mohawk named former National Lacrosse League (NLL) player and current Georgia Swarm assistant coach Andy Secore as the team’s head coach at the time of the program’s launch.

“Launching the lacrosse sixes program was important not only to expand our varsity offerings, but also to show leadership in growing the sport at the collegiate level,” said Matthew Ferreira, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Mohawk. “Being the first college to do so reflects our commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and to provide a new pathway for higher education that is different from university, for athletes interested in lacrosse.”

The inaugural year of the program focused on building awareness across campus and in the Hamilton community. In 2024, the Mountaineers played a competitive six-game schedule, including two matchups versus the McMaster Marauders and one each against the Brock Badgers and Western Mustangs.

During the first-ever CUFLA Sixes Showcase Game at the Baggataway Cup, Mohawk battled the Milton Chaos Senior C team in a thrilling contest that ended in a narrow 23–21 loss.

A major milestone came in October 2024 when Mountaineers standout Dawson Brown signed an NLL contract with the Georgia Swarm, marking an early success story for the young program.

“We are proud of the growth we have achieved through our first two years,” said Ferreira. “We’ve received tremendous support from Mohawk College administration, the local community, and the broader lacrosse community. That support has been instrumental in building a strong foundation for the program’s future.”

Now preparing for year three, Mohawk is expected to announce another six-game schedule in the coming weeks. With rising interest in the sixes format and increasing visibility at the post-secondary level, the Mountaineers are proving to be a driving force in the sport’s development.

Details for the 2025 Baggataway Cup, including the second annual CUFLA Sixes Showcase Game, will be released soon.

CUFLA Commissioner Scott Fox praised the development of collegiate Sixes lacrosse and its growing impact in Canada.

CUFLA is proud to support the growth and development of College Sixes lacrosse in Canada,” said Fox. “The Sixes format makes a lot of sense for colleges—it’s fast-paced, exciting, and accessible. Programs like the one at Mohawk College are helping to establish a consistent place where young fans can experience men’s Sixes lacrosse at a high level. We’re excited to see the Sixes game continue to expand to more colleges across Canada.”

As Mohawk prepares for its third season, a new six-game exhibition schedule is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. With growing interest in the lacrosse sixes format and increasing visibility at the post-secondary level, the Mountaineers are helping shape the future of the sport in Canada.

Further details on the 2025 Baggataway Cup and the second annual CUFLA Sixes Showcase Game will be released soon.
